Bicycle pedals: clipless and flat

Choosing the right bike pedals is essential for a comfortable and efficient ride. The first step is to decide between flat or clipless pedals.

If you're an experienced cyclist, clipless pedals, also known as SPD pedals, offer better power transfer and efficiency. However, they require special cycling shoes.

Flat pedals, often called flats or platforms, are great for casual riding and beginners, as well as for bike park riders and situations where you need to take your feet off the pedals or “jump” off the bike frequently. These pedals are suitable for everyday shoes. Look for flat pedals with grip-enhancing features like studs or textured surfaces, especially if you’ll be riding in wet conditions or off-road.

Modern pedals are made of durable materials such as aluminium, titanium or carbon composite. These materials provide a good balance between strength and weight. It doesn't matter whether you are a fan of clipless or platform pedals.
