What is the function of the rim and hub of a bicycle wheel?

Bicycle rim is the outer circular part of the wheel that holds the tire and provides structure and support for the wheel. It is usually made of aluminium or carbon fibre and consists of a circular hoop with spike holes all around. The rim is connected to the hub via spokes, creating a strong and stable wheel assembly.
Bicycle hub is the central part of the wheel, located in the centre of the rim. It contains bearings, an axle and an idler nut (in the case of rear hubs). It serves as a connection point between the wheel and the bicycle frame or fork. The hub enables smooth rotation of the wheel around the axis.

Hub and rim together form a functional wheel assembly. The spokes connect the hub to the rim, transfer the rider's pedalling force from the hub to the rim, and carry the weight of the rider and bike. Hub bearings allow the hub and rim to rotate smoothly, reducing friction and allowing the wheel to spin freely.

Can I change the hub on a bicycle wheel?

Installing a brand-new hub requires rebuilding the wheel from the ground up and threading it, which is usually more expensive than buying a new wheel. Are all hubs compatible with all rims?

Not all hubs are compatible with all rims. The number of spoke holes on the rim and hub must match. Common numbers of holes for bicycle rims and hubs are 24, 28, 32 or 36.
