For installation, adjustment and replacement information not found in the user's manual, consult the place of purchase or a distributor. A dealer's manual for professional and experienced bicycle mechanics is available on our website (https://si.shimano.com).
For safety, be sure to read this "user's manual" thoroughly before use, follow it for correct use, and save it so that you can refer back to it at any time.
The following instructions should always be followed in order to prevent personal injury, physical damage to equipment and the surrounding area. The instructions are classified according to the degree of danger or damage that may occur if the product is used incorrectly.
DANGER - Failure to follow the instructions will result in death or serious injury.
WARNING - Failure to follow the instructions could result in death or serious injury.
CAUTION - Failure to follow the instructions could result in personal injury or physical damage to equipment and surroundings.
WARNING
- Do not disassemble or modify the product. This may cause the product to malfunction, you may fall unexpectedly and be seriously injured.
- Before attempting to ride with these pedals and cleats (on shoes), make sure you understand the operation of the pedal and cleat (on shoes) locking/releasing mechanism. SPD-SL pedals are designed to release only when needed. They are not designed to release automatically when you fall off your bike.
- Use only SPD-SL shoes with this product. Other types of shoes may not release from the pedals or may release unexpectedly.
- Use only SHIMANO cleats and securely tighten the mounting screws to the shoe. If the screws are not tightened securely, you may fall when the cleats do not release.
- Before attempting to ride with these pedals and cleats, apply the brakes, then place one foot on the ground and practice engaging and disengaging each cleat from the pedal until you can do so automatically and with minimal effort.
- Ride on a level surface first until you learn how to engage and disengage the cleats from the pedals.
- Before riding, adjust the cleat holding force on the pedals to your needs. If the cleat holding force on the pedals is low, the cleats may release accidentally, you may lose your balance and you may fall off the bike. If the cleat holding force on the pedals is high, the cleats may not be easy to release.
- When riding at low speed or if there is a possibility that you may need to stop (e.g. when making a U-turn, at an intersection, when riding uphill or turning a sharp corner) release the cleats from the pedals beforehand so that you can quickly put your feet on the ground if necessary.
- When riding in adverse conditions, use a lower cleat holding force to attach the pedal cleats.
- To ensure proper engagement and release, keep the cleats and bindings free of dirt and debris.
- Remember to check the cleats regularly for wear. When the cleats are worn, replace them and adjust the cleat holding force before riding and after replacing the pedal cleats. Failure to heed the above warnings may result in the shoe not slipping out of the pedals when you want it to, or it may slip out unexpectedly or accidentally, resulting in serious injury.
- Reflectors must be installed on the bicycle whenever riding on public roads. Reflectors are sold separately for models that are not standard equipped with reflectors. Contact the place of purchase or a distributor for information on compatible reflectors.
-If the reflectors are dirty or damaged, do not continue riding the bicycle. Otherwise, it will be difficult for oncoming vehicles to spot you.
