Big Test: 6 pedals, 6 different manufacturers. How did they perform?

We tested a range of pedals to help make your choice easier.

Choosing the right pedals can be a long and challenging process. Sometimes you find the perfect pair right away; other times, even after trying several models, you still come up empty-handed.

This season, I tested six pairs of flat pedals from various manufacturers. I evaluated several key characteristics, including platform shape and size, pin shape and height, pin placement, as well as pedal weight and price.

I tested all the pedals on several trails of varying difficulty and also switched between different cycling shoes to see how pedal performance changed with different sole types. So, what’s my verdict?

BBB Enigma

The Enigma from BBB is a pedal I would classify as average. Whether it’s the construction, platform, or pins, these pedals will serve you well if maximum grip is not your top priority. Their main limitation is the conical pin design, which reduces overall grip.

However, despite the relatively high price, you still get a quality pedal with solid performance.

TATZE MC-AIR

Cyclists with larger feet will particularly appreciate the generous platform size. This model is best suited to riders with at least EU size 42 shoes. The large platform, combined with numerous conical pins, provides above-average—but not excessive—grip.

I especially liked these pedals for their platform size and robust construction.

KLS FLAT 50BB

Their strongest feature is their excellent price-to-performance ratio. For a reasonable price, you get well-made pedals with sufficient grip. They may not satisfy the most demanding riders, but beginners and recreational cyclists looking for great value will appreciate them.

The pedals are not the lightest, however.

Crankbrothers Stamp 1 Gen 2

My new favorite pedal model. The manufacturer clearly put a great deal of thought into designing the second generation, and the result is outstanding. You get exceptional grip, excellent pin placement, and a well-designed platform shape at an affordable price.

However, they may not be ideal for beginners, who could find the high level of grip excessive.

Longus HORD

The pedals from Longus, known for their excellent price-to-performance ratio, are particularly well suited to recreational cyclists. Their main strengths are not maximum grip but rather a durable platform and solid construction at a very attractive price.

I recommend these pedals as an upgrade from the standard plastic pedals often supplied with new bikes.

Shimano MTB PD-GR500

The GR-500 is an excellent, proven, and robust pedal with adjustable pin height. If racing and all-out riding are not your primary focus, these pedals may be exactly what you need.

Sharp pins provide above-average grip on a generously sized platform.
