Rims for mountain bicycles

MTB

Mountain bike rims play a key role in the overall performance and longevity of the wheels. They come in different sizes, materials and designs to suit different riding styles and terrains. When choosing the right rim, it is advisable to consider the following points:

  • Size: MTB rims come in a variety of sizes, with 26-inch, 27.5-inch (650b) and 29-inch being the most common. The choice of size can significantly affect the bike's handling, rolling resistance and ability to move on different terrains.
  • Material:
    • Aluminium: Aluminium rims are the most common and cost-effective choice. They are lightweight and provide a good balance between strength and weight, making them suitable for a wide range of riding styles.
    • Carbon Fibre: Carbon fibre rims are lightweight and offer excellent stiffness and strength. They are often preferred by riders looking for the highest performance, but can be more expensive.
  • Width:
    • Inner width: The inner width of the rim impacts the width and shape of the tire. Wider rims can accommodate wider tires and provide better traction and stability. Common internal widths range from 23 mm to 35 mm or more.
    • Outside Width: Outside width can impact aerodynamics and is essential to ensure compatibility with the frame and fork.
  • Profile:
    • Traditional double-wall rims: They have a box profile and are durable, suitable for various driving conditions.
    • Single-wall rims: These rims are lightweight and used for racing, but are less durable and can be prone to damage.
  • Tubeless Rim Compatibility: Many MTB rims are designed for use with tubeless tires. Tubeless tires can reduce the risk of punctures, reduce rolling resistance and improve traction.
  • Rim construction: Some rims are designed for specific purposes, such as cross-country, trail, all-mountain or downhill. These designs may include features such as reinforced sidewalls for increased durability or a lightweight construction for climbing.

When choosing MTB rims, consider your riding style, the terrain you will conquer, and also your budget. The right rim can significantly affect the performance of the bike, so it is worth doing some research.
