Open-ended ferrules have low friction performance and are cheaper, but offer less protection to the system from dirt. They are well suited for use on bikes with unlined cables in areas with a lower probability of contamination by water or dirt. You can use these ferrules in cases where only minimal protection from dirt is needed, for example, in the lever areas.
