The 303 S wheels are the successor to the successful wheels that dominated the spring classics. They stay true to the 45mm rim height, which is ideal for any terrain, but have grown significantly in width, as the larger internal rim width provides better performance and ride quality in almost every measurable direction. Road bikes are much more versatile than in the past, regardless of road surface, but still at least as fast. The 303 S wheels have a completely new rim profile and rim design to optimize rider performance on this new generation of road bikes. The wheels are suitable for tubeless and disc brakes. They allow the use of wider tires with lower air pressure and achieve the speed of racing bikes on and off the road.

The 303 S wheels are among Zipp's lightest wheels and are optimized for the most efficient aerodynamic performance with 28mm wide tires, but are also able to accommodate gravel tires up to 50mm wide. The 303 S series borrows the design concept from the wheels of the higher model series 303 Firecrest Tubeless Disc-brake, where higher speed is achieved thanks to higher efficiency. The key innovation is in the design of the 303 S rim. The 45mm rim height is the same as the predecessor 302 Disc-brake, but the outer width is 2mm larger at 27mm and the width between the rim lugs is a full 7mm wider at 23mm. The rim is designed for the fastest performance with a 28mm tire. The wide rim also optimizes the tire profile for use with lower air pressure. This helps reduce rolling resistance and makes driving more comfortable. The result of all these changes is a saving of 10 watts compared to the best competitive bike in the total power required to ride at 40 km/h on a flat road with a 28mm tire (Zipp internal testing).
