Zipp 303 XPLR S Carbon Disc 28" rear wheel, 12x142 mm, CL, lockring SRAM XDR
The 303 XPLR wheels are speed-focused gravel wheels designed with a new approach: start with the perfect gravel tire and design a wheel around it. To develop this first-of-its-kind wheel set, Zipp engineers studied how gravel racing has changed cycling in recent years and came to a few key conclusions:
1. The speed development of gravel increases the importance of aerodynamic efficiency.
2. The current generation of gravel wheels exhibit poor aerodynamic efficiency with gravel tires.
3. Low tire pressures are key to unlocking speed on gravel, but current gravel rim designs don't provide enough clearance for the tires to support lateral loads at lower pressures.
4. Current gravel rims do not prevent punctures at low tire pressures.
Typical tire widths for gravel racing range from 38 to 50 mm with a variety of tread patterns. Current gravel wheels have an outer rim width of 28-30mm, which creates an aerodynamic mismatch when using a 40mm+ gravel tire. With a narrower rim and wider tire, the tire-bike interface looks more like light bulb bumps than the ideal seamless aerodynamic profile. According to Zipp testing, the efficient wheel-to-gravel tire connection on our 303 XPLR design provides an aerodynamic advantage of 5 watts over the leading competitor. This wheel is optimized for use with Goodyear XPLR Slick and Goodyear XPLR Inter tires, which were designed in collaboration with Zipp.
Low tire pressures significantly increase speed on gravel. The problem with current gravel wheelsets is that the narrow rim between the beads for low-pressure tires will cause the tire to collapse when cornering. The wide rim between the tire beads on the 303 XPLR increases tire space, allowing lower pressures without tire slippage under side loads. This means reduced vibration losses while maintaining predictable cornering control and uninterrupted traction on climbs. The 303 XPLR also helps reduce punctures thanks to a rim edge that is 77 percent thicker than previous models, reducing the chance of damage when the tire hits the rim edge.
What about rim height? Conventional thinking suggests that lower rims are best suited for gravel. As gravel racing has progressed, many gravel tracks are raced at speeds over 35 km/h with top speeds over 60 km/h. The 303 XPLR rim is 54mm tall, creating an effective aerodynamic complement for large gravel tires at high speeds. Our research found that a 54mm-tall rim creates the perfect ratio for aerodynamic efficiency with a 40mm gravel tire at race speeds.
Finally, the last critical element for speed on gravel is yourself. You are literally an engine that drives through the terrain. The lower tire pressures achievable with the 303 XPLR will keep you in top condition with less muscle fatigue up to 11. hours of driving by insulating you from endless hours of bumps and jolts. With the 303 XPLR, you'll reach the finish line better prepared than ever for the final sprint to the finish.
*303 XPLR SW AND 303 XPLR S ARE ONLY COMPATIBLE WITH APPROVED TIRES. The Goodyear XPLR Slick and Goodyear XPLR Inter tires are specially designed and optimized for the 303 XPLR.
The Zipp 303 XPLR S is a big leap forward in speed for the gravel rider, without the high price tag. This wheelset takes key innovations from our premium wide gravel set, the 303 XPLR SW, and is affordable and robust for the demanding gravel rider. This wheelset is the fastest on gravel thanks to its mega wide rim that integrates seamlessly with approved gravel race tires.
