Tubeless rim tapes
Tubeless rim tape is a special tape that is used to seal the spoke holes on the inside of a bicycle rim, creating an airtight seal. This allows cyclists to use tubeless rims and use tubeless tires without the need for tubes. Tubeless rim tape is typically made of a durable, lightweight material that is puncture and abrasion resistant. Its main function is to prevent air from escaping through the holes in the rim, thus maintaining the airtightness required for tubeless kits.
What advantages does a tubeless system offer?
The advantages of tubeless systems for bicycle wheels include:
- Better ride quality and comfort: Tubeless tires can be run at lower pressures, providing a more comfortable and enjoyable ride on rough terrain. This also increases traction and grip, especially in difficult conditions.
- Better puncture protection: The sealant used in tubeless tires can quickly seal small punctures, preventing punctures and allowing you to continue riding without interruption.
- Lower rolling resistance: Tubeless tires typically have lower rolling resistance compared to tube tires. This can result in a smoother and more efficient ride, especially at higher speeds.
- Weight savings: Removing the tube reduces weight when turning, which can lead to better acceleration and overall performance.
- Versatility: Tubeless setups are universal and can be used in a variety of riding disciplines including road cycling, mountain biking, gravel, and cyclocross.
- Environmentally friendly: Tubeless wheels reduce the need for disposable inner tubes, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly cycling experience.
How to properly install tubeless tape into a rim?
To install tubeless tape on your bicycle rim, follow these steps:
- Gather your supplies: You will need tubeless rim tape, a clean rag, rubbing alcohol/isopropyl alcohol, scissors, and a tubeless valve.
- Rim preparation: Remove the tire and tube from the rim. Thoroughly clean the rim bed with a rag and alcohol to ensure a clean, grease-free surface for the tape to adhere to.
- Start at the valve hole: Start the installation at the valve hole on the rim. Attach the end of the tape to the rim at the valve hole.
- Apply the tape: Slowly and evenly apply the tape to the rim well and press it firmly. Make sure the tape is properly centred and aligned to cover the entire rim, well all the way to the rim beads.
- Smooth out curls: When applying the tape, smooth out any folds or air bubbles to ensure a secure and even seal.
- Cut off the excess tape: Once you have wrapped the entire circumference of the rim, use scissors to cut off the excess tape and end the tape at the valve hole so that it covers all the holes in the rim.
- Valve installation: Insert the valve into the valve hole from the inside of the rim and tighten the lock nut from the outside to secure it. Don't forget the gasket under the nut.
- Press the tape down: Press the tape down along the entire rim bed to make sure it is securely adhered and sealed.
- Check for proper sealing: Check that the tape is evenly applied to the rim and that there are no gaps or loose parts that could cause air leaks.
