Bearings and others
The "bearings and other" category offers a wide selection of quality bicycle wheel accessories: bearings, hubs, axles, and cones from renowned brands such as Fulcrum, Shimano, Mavic.
Bearings (hub bearings)
Main functions of bicycle wheel bearings:
- They allow the wheel to rotate smoothly and continuously around the axis.
- They reduce friction between the hub and the wheel axle.
- They transfer the rider's weight and the load during riding to the bicycle frame.
Types:
- Ball bearings (classic) – used mainly in basic and serviceable hubs.
- Industrial bearings (sealed bearings) – closed, more durable, maintenance-free (more common in modern hubs).
Hubs (freewheel bodies/freehubs)
Function:
- They transmit torque from the cassette to the hub – meaning they enable the rear wheel to be driven while pedalling.
- They allow for “freewheeling” - meaning that when you stop pedalling, the wheel continues to spin without you turning the pedals.
- They contain a ratchet mechanism, springs, and teeth (the so-called “ratchet” system or pawls).
The hub bearing is an integral part of the freewheel body (hub) of a bicycle wheel hub. Its main task is to ensure smooth and precise rotation of the hub around the hub axis, thereby contributing to the reliable transmission of force from the cassette to the hub, while reducing friction and wear.
Axles and hub ends (adapters)
Function:
- Axles: Axles are the central component of the hub, around which the bearings and wheel rotate. They are attached to the bike frame (various standards: quick release, 12 mm, 15 mm thru axle, etc.).
- End caps: (end caps, adapter) End caps allow the hub to be adapted to different types of axles or frames. For example, end caps for 12×142 mm thru axles or adaptations for Boost spacing.
Latches and springs
Function:
- Part of the freewheel mechanism (in the hub). They ensure engagement and free running.
- When you pedal, the pawls engage and transfer force to the wheel.
- When you stop pedalling, the springs take care of their return movement, allowing for quiet operation.
Cones
Hub cones are a key component in classic bicycle wheel ball bearings. They serve as a support and guide surface for the bearing balls, ensuring smooth rotation of the hub around the axle. The cone, in combination with the hub, allows for the correct adjustment of the clearances in the hub, which has a direct impact on the operation of the wheel and its service life.
