Ski mountaineering bindings
Ski mountaineering bindings are specialized bindings that offer a unique combination of features suitable for uphill and downhill freeriding. This binding allows skiers to climb challenging terrain by releasing the heel of the ski, allowing for walking. Find out what you need to know about ski mountaineering bindings here:
- Binding modes: Ski touring bindings usually have two modes - a “touring” mode, which allows a free heel on the ascent, and a “ski” mode, which locks the heel on the descent.
- Tech (pin) or frame binding:
- Tech bindings: It uses a system of pins, is lightweight and excellent for long hikes. Requires ski boots with technical pin inserts.
- Frame bindings: Frame bindings are compatible with traditional ski bindings, they are heavier but provide more support and stability on the downhill.
- Brakes: Choose bindings with brakes suitable for the width of your skis. The brakes prevent the skis from starting if they are not worn on the ski, thus increasing safety in the terrain.
- Weight: Lightweight materials, such as aluminium and carbon, are common in skialp bindings to minimize overall weight. Consider weight and durability.
- Incline height adjustment: Adjustable incline height provides comfort when climbing uphill, as it reduces the load on the calves. Look for bindings with easy incline adjustment.
- Release torque: Look for bindings with sufficient DIN release force depending on rider weight, terrain, and skiing ability
