Avalanche probes

Avalanche probes

An avalanche probe

  • Design: Avalanche probes are typically lightweight and collapsible for easy carrying in a backpack. They consist of multiple sections that can be assembled quickly to create a long, rigid pole.
  • Material: Probes are commonly made of lightweight materials such as aluminium or carbon fibre, balancing durability and weight.
  • Length: Probes come in varying lengths, typically ranging from 240 to 320 centimetres (about 8 to 10 feet). The length is important for reaching the depth at which a buried person might be located.
  • Segments: Most probes are made of multiple segments that can be screwed or snapped together. This design allows for quick assembly when time is of the essence.
  • Probe tip: The tip of the probe is often designed to penetrate snow easily. It may have a pointed or conical shape to minimize resistance.

During an avalanche rescue scenario, an avalanche probe is used after locating a victim's signal with an avalanche transceiver. Rescuers insert the probe into the snow at systematic intervals, searching for the buried person. Once the probe contacts the victim, the depth is noted, and the probe is left in place to guide the subsequent shovel work.
