MTB disc brakes
Disc brakes are an integral part of every modern mountain bike. They offer the highest level of reliability, braking performance and modulation, regardless of the weather, terrain, or length of the descent.
Whether you're tackling challenging enduro trails, enjoying day-long mountain trips, or needing to stop safely in muddy conditions, you'll find brake systems in this category that meet your performance and control needs.
Why choose disc brakes?
- Consistent performance: Unlike rim brakes, disc brakes provide reliable braking performance even in the wet, in mud or in snow.
- Higher braking force: They provide significantly more force required for sudden stops, increasing safety at high speeds and steep descents.
- Modulation (Control Sensitivity): They allow for precise and fine-tuned braking force, which is key to maintaining traction and control over the bike in technical terrain.
- Thermal stability: Larger discs and advanced cooling technology (Ice-Tech) effectively dissipate heat during long descents, preventing fading of braking performance.
Hydraulic disc brakes
- Principle: The braking force is transmitted by an incompressible hydraulic fluid (mineral oil or DOT).
- Features: Offering the best feel, highest power and best modulation, they are the standard for recreational, trail and downhill mountain bikes.
Mechanical disc brakes
- Principle: The braking force is transmitted by a steel cable, similar to rim brakes.
- Features: Cheaper and easier to maintain. Suitable for entry-level MTB models or bikes on a budget. Their performance and modulation are lower than hydraulic brakes.
How to choose the right mountain bike brake?
- Number of pistons:
- 2-piston: Lightweight, ideal for XC (Cross-Country) and lighter trail riding. Good performance and low weight.
- 4-piston: Maximum power and control, ideal for Enduro, Downhill and demanding trails. They provide a larger contact area and higher heat resistance.
- Disc type: Choose discs with the appropriate diameter (often 180 mm / 203 mm for difficult terrain) and mounting (Center-Lock or 6-hole).
What is the difference between mineral oil and DOT fluid?
Mineral oil (Shimano, Magura) is non-corrosive and does not absorb water, but can foam at high temperatures. DOT fluid (SRAM, Tektro) absorbs water (which lowers the boiling point and therefore needs to be changed more often), but has a higher boiling point and is more stable at extreme temperatures.
How often should I bleed the brakes?
Hydraulic brakes should be bled at least once a year, or whenever:
- The brake lever is too soft or too deep.
- You change the brake fluid.
- The system was opened (e.g. when shortening a hose).
Is it possible to mix calipers and levers from different manufacturers?
Not recommended. Each manufacturer has a different piston diameter ratio and different fluids, which can lead to ineffective braking and potential safety hazards. Always use brake components from the same brand.
