When picking a mountain bike (MTB) handlebar, it's important to consider several factors that affect comfort, handling, and ride quality. Here's an overview of the main aspects you should consider:

Handlebar width

Wider handlebars (760-820 mm): Better stability and control on descents and technical terrain. Suitable for trail, enduro, downhill.
Narrower handlebars (680-740 mm): Greater manoeuvrability in tight spaces, suitable for XC or smaller riders.

Rise – handlebar rise

It determines how high the rider's hands are above the stem.

0 – 10 mm: Lower seat, sporty position (XC).
20 – 35 mm: More comfortable and upright seating position (trail, enduro).

Backsweep and upsweep

Backsweep: A slight curve towards the rider (often 7–9°). Reduces strain on the wrists.
Upsweep: An upward tilt (usually 4–6°). Affects elbow position and grip.

Material

Aluminium: Durable, affordable, excellent price/performance ratio.
Carbon: Lighter, better dampens vibrations, higher price – suitable for performance riding.

Clamp size

31.8 mm or 35 mm: Modern MTB handlebars use these diameters. A larger diameter provides greater stiffness, but can be less comfortable.

Can I shorten the handlebars if they are too wide?

Yes, most MTB handlebars have cut marks. Do the shortening gradually and always on both sides equally. Be careful to leave enough space for grips, levers, and accessories.

Are 35 mm handlebars better than 31.8 mm?

The 35 mm diameter is stiff enough for aggressive riding (enduro, DH), while the 31.8 mm offers more comfort. The choice depends on your riding style and personal preference.
