Bike brakes
Quality brakes are a basic prerequisite for safe driving - when choosing a suitable brake, the construction of a specific bicycle must be taken into account. For disc brakes, we distinguish between mechanical (recreational use) and hydraulic variants. In addition to high-quality brakes, their servicing should not be underestimated. Discs, brake pads or brake blocks have their lifetime. Hydraulic brakes only work well if they are properly bled.
What are the main advantages of disc and rim brakes?
- Rim brakes: These brakes are the most common type of bicycle brake. To slow down or stop the bicycle, blocks are used that are pressed against the wheel rim. Rim brakes include caliper brakes, which are used on road bikes, and V-brakes, which are commonly used on mountain bikes. Rim brakes are light, affordable, and relatively easy to maintain.
- Disc brakes: Disc brakes are becoming more and more popular, especially on high-end mountain bikes and road bikes. They use a rotor attached to the wheel hub and a caliper that clamps onto the frame to provide braking power. Disc brakes offer better stopping power, especially in wet or muddy conditions, and are less affected by rim wear. They are available in hydraulic and mechanical versions, with hydraulic disc brakes generally providing stronger and more consistent braking.
What are the other important components of bicycle brakes?
When it comes to bicycle brakes, there are several accessories and components that can improve their performance, safety, and maintenance:
- Brake pads: Brake pads are an essential part of the brake system. They provide the friction needed to slow down or stop the bike. To maintain optimal braking performance, it is essential to regularly inspect and replace brake pads when they become worn or damaged.
- Brake levers: Brake levers are controls attached to the handlebars that allow the brakes to be activated. Upgrading the levers can improve braking performance, comfort, and modulation.
- Brake callipers: Brake callipers are mechanisms that apply pressure to the brake pads and press them against the rim or rotor to slow or stop the bicycle. Upgrading to lighter and more powerful brake callipers can improve braking performance, especially when going downhill.
- Brake discs: If your bike has disc brakes, the brake discs are a key component. They are attached to the wheel hub and provide a surface for the brake pads to attach to.
