A modern bicycle accessory that allows you to track and record data about the ride and the cyclist. The basic ones include speedometers or tachometers, which differ in the number of functions and the way they communicate with sensors. The ones with cables are cheaper, the ones without cables are smarter. Better equipped devices can measure e.g. pedalling frequency or meters climbed.

What types of speedometers to consider when choosing?

When it comes to speedometers, there are various types available in the market. Each type offers different features and functions to meet different needs:

Wire speedometers: Consist of a handlebar-mounted display unit and a wire connecting it to a fork-mounted sensor. The sensor detects the rotation of the wheel and sends the data to the display unit. Wired speedometers are generally reliable and give accurate readings, but the presence of wires can be a bit cumbersome.
Wireless speedometers: Eliminate the need for cables by using wireless technology to transmit data between the sensor and the display unit. This type of speedometer offers a cleaner look on your bike and easier installation.

How to install a speedometer on a bicycle?

Before you begin, make sure you have all the tools you need to install. You will usually need: a screwdriver, zip ties and a small spanner or set of Allen keys.

Mount the sensor: Start by mounting the sensor to the front fork. Choose a suitable location that allows the sensor to pass near the magnet on the tip of the wheel. Securely fasten the sensor in place with the help of zip ties.
Install the magnet: Attach the magnet to one of the spokes of the wheel, making sure it is aligned with the sensor as the wheel rotates. The magnet should be placed close enough to the sensor.
Mount the display unit: Next, mount the display unit to the handlebars. Most speedometers come with adjustable or rubber mounts that allow for easy installation. Make sure that the display has been placed in a suitable place so that it is clearly visible while driving.
Connect sensor and display: Carefully guide the driver along the frame, make sure it is secure and won't interfere with pedalling or handling. Connect the wire to the designated port on the display unit and the sensor. In the case of wireless speedometers, pair the display unit with the sensor according to the attached manual.
Test and calibration: Once everything is securely installed, it's time to test the speedometers. Take the bike for a short ride and make sure the magnet passes just past the sensor. Check that the display unit shows accurate speed data.
Adjust settings: Some speedometers allow customization, e.g. choosing between metric or imperial units, setting the wheel size or setting other features such as driving distance or average speed. Read the user manual for your specific speedometer.
