The main function of the wax is to keep the saddle flexible and prevent it from drying out over time. From this point of view, it is not entirely necessary to apply it to a completely new saddle. On the contrary, Brooks recommends that it be applied roughly every six months. Proofide should be carefully applied to the top of the saddle, covering the entire top surface. The saddle should then be left to "stand" for a few hours so that the wax has enough time to soak deep into the individual leather fibers, before buffing it with a soft cloth.
