The main function of brooks wax is to keep the saddle flexible and prevent it from drying out over time. From this point of view, it is not absolutely necessary to fill in a brand new saddle. Conversely, Brooks recommends that Brooks Proofide be applied to the saddle roughly every six months.
Proofide should be carefully applied to the upper side of the saddle so that it covers the entire upper surface. The saddle should then be left to "stand" for several hours so that the wax has enough time to penetrate deep into the individual fibers of the leather, before polishing it with a soft cloth.
