A ferrata set is specialized climbing equipment used to overcome via ferratas, which are secured climbing routes with fixed ropes, ladders and other aids. The set usually includes a helmet, which is an essential part of any climbing equipment, to protect the head from falling rock fragments and impacts. There may be loose rocks or other hazards when crossing a via ferrata, so wearing a helmet is essential for safety. Furthermore, there is a harness that is worn around the waist and thighs and is used to securely attach to the steel rope of the ferrata or other safety elements. The shock absorber is also an important part. It is often built into a ferrata cable (a short strap with carabiners at each end) and works to reduce the force on the body and anchor points in the event of a fall.
