Ortovox Free Rider S Avasatchet Kit backpack, 20 l, black anthracite
Robust construction, perfect ergonomics, integrated spine protector and ultra-light AVABAG avalanche system. This is also how the ORTOVOX FREE RIDER 20 S AVABAG KIT backpack could be described in one sentence, which, as the name implies, is designed directly for freeride.
SPS Flex back with certified spine protector
A backpack with avalanche equipment must be carried with you every time you ride off-piste. Why not have a backpack with an integrated spine protector and an avalanche system at the same time? It's easy with the ORTOVOX FREE RIDER 20 S AVABAG KIT backpack! It includes the back system SPS Flex system with a spine protector, which is more comfortable and lighter than a classic back spine under a jacket. SPS Flex is a combination of a comfortable back system and a certified spine protector, which was developed by experienced physiotherapists.
The spine system is made up of memory foam padding in eight zones. The spine protector is flexible and absorbs impact based on the principle of deformation and energy absorption at the molecular level.
Perfect backpack ergonomics
The weight of the ORTOVOX FREE RIDER 20 S AVABAG KIT backpack is 1410 g (without the avalanche system), including the SPS FLEX back system. The backpack has a wide waist belt with Velcro, from which the back collar leads to the shoulder straps. It fits beautifully and forms one unit with the body, which you will feel during any wild ride. The entire contact zone with the back is covered with a softshell that prevents snow from sticking. The waist strap fastens with an ingenious metal buckle, which you can easily unfasten even with one gloved hand.
An almost indestructible freeride backpack
The backpack is made of BALLSHADOW material, which stands out for its great resistance to abrasion and water. In addition, the backpack has a reinforcing hem along the entire perimeter, which evenly distributes the weight of the full backpack on the body and prevents the carrying part of the backpack from tearing. The interior has bright orange colors for better visibility even in poor conditions or in the dark.
All equipment has its place
The ORTOVOX FREE RIDER 20 S AVABAG KIT backpack contains a number of practically distributed pockets. In addition, the interior is bright for better orientation in the dark.
- The main pocket has a two-way zipper along the perimeter of the backpack, so you can get into it like a suitcase. You can see everything right away and you don't have to search the whole backpack. In the main pocket you will find printed instructions for assembling the airbag, a loop for the gas bottle and a clip for the water tank.
- Separate pocket for avalanche equipment - probe and shovel.
- The front pocket also contains a zipper pocket for small items.
- Furthermore, the backpack has a pocket on the hip belt, which is suitable for a mobile phone or camera.
- In the lower part of the backpack there is a pocket with a net for the helmet.
- The top pocket is designed to hide ski straps.
Separate pocket for avalanche equipment
There are compartments for avalanche equipment in the front chamber. The zipper of this bag is marked in red and inside this chamber there are sewn compartments for a shovel, a handle and a probe, and if necessary, unpacking things for avalanche rescue is a matter of seconds.
You can easily attach freeride equipment to it
Everything has its place. You will appreciate the clever attachment of equipment from the outer part of the backpack to all the equipment you need for freeride.
- skis/snowboard/snowshoes
- one ice axe
- sticks
- helmet
The AVABAG avalanche system, made in Switzerland, works on the principle of the Venturi effect, which does not need any electronics to function, is fully enclosed and very simple in design. There is no damage or corrosion. The volume of the entire system unit is 1.8 l, so it is smaller than a two-liter bottle of water, but the weight is almost a third, 690 g!
- The weight of the avalanche system unit is 690 g.
- The weight of the bomb is 310 g.
- The AVABAG avalanche system weighs 1000 g in total.
Despite how small the system is, it has enormous power and inflates the airbag very quickly (it was able to lift a car during tests). Thanks to its small volume, you will always have enough space for your things and you don't have to hesitate whether to take the avalanche system kit with you or leave it at home. The volume of the backpack size 20 l indicates the actual volume after subtracting the volume of the entire AVABAG system (including the bomb).
- Slovak instructions for using the AVABAG system
- Welded airbag that keeps the air longer
- The 160 liter emergency airbag is not glued or sewn.
- Everything is connected by innovative welding technology in one single edge. That's why the bag is so light, durable and waterproof.
- The instructions for assembling the airbag "into an accordion" are part of the backpack and you always have this important information with you.
Simple activation of the avalanche system
The ergonomic pull handle with anti-slip treatment is easy to grip. In addition, it is possible to adjust the handle according to the height of the figure, so you will always have it at hand. Whether you are right-handed or left-handed, you can always grip the handle comfortably and correctly. There is a pocket on the shoulder strap in which you can hide the cable in situations where you do not want the system to be activated unintentionally (at the lodge, in the cable car cabin, etc.)
Practice shots in the dirt
Canadian avalanche researcher Pascal Haegeli reports that 12% of people who were carrying any avalanche systems and were buried died because they failed to activate the unit properly. This led ORTOVOX to the idea of repeatedly trying to activate the system without the need for a bomb. So you can train in the dirt and be sure that you will know exactly what to do when the worst happens.
You can stretch the needle of the activation unit and repeatedly try to pull the handle correctly. The activation key is included in the package. When you activate "blindly" you will hear the pop of the fired needle and you are sure that you are doing everything correctly.
Choose a bomb.
Stretch the needle with the activation key.
Put on your backpack.
Set the correct position of the handle to the height of your figure.
Adjust the backpack and tighten it tightly (waist belt, shoulder straps, secure the safety strap).
Pull the handle.
Can you hear the popping? You did everything right! Don't forget to thread the needle again.
Didn't you hear the snap? Something is wrong! Do everything again or contact your dealer.
Carbon bomb for the plane
For the AVABAG system, use the original carbon bomb, which weighs only 310 g. Despite the same thread and size of the cylinder, the gas content is under a different pressure and in a different volume than in the cylinder of the ABS system. Therefore, it is not possible to use the ABS cylinder with the AVABAG system. After using the cartridge, it is not necessary to buy a new one, but it is enough to have it refilled at an ORTOVOX dealer. The filling is certified for 5 years. AVABAG bombs are certified by an international airline company for safety, so you can transport them by air (documents can be found on the seller's website or directly on the ORTOVOX website).
THE BOMB IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE PACKAGE!
Compatible with all AVABAG backpacks
Do you only want to buy a different type of backpack and you already have one backpack with the AVABAG system? The system is fully compatible with all ORTOVOX AVABAG backpacks, you can move one system from one backpack to another as needed. The instructions for folding the airbag are a permanent part of every backpack, so you never forget it and you always have it practically at hand.
In the version with a shorter back
This variant of the "S" backpack is designed for people with a back length of 36 to 44 cm. However, the ORTOVOX FREE RIDER AVABAG backpack can also be purchased in a variant for those of you with a back length between 42 and 50 cm. The length of the back is calculated from the 7th cervical vertebra to the upper part of the pelvis. The backpack is not only modified in the length of the back, but also changes in the shape of the shoulder straps and adjustment of the waist belt. The backpack thus fits perfectly and holds more firmly on the back.
