Choosing the right "D carabiner" is important for safety in various outdoor activities, such as mountain climbing, rock climbing or caving. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a carabiner:

  • Type of carabiner:
    • Standard D-shaped carabiner: It is a versatile choice suitable for a wide range of activities.
    • Asymmetrical D-shaped carabiner: This carabiner provides a larger opening, making it easier to attach and detach.
  • Material:
    • Aluminium: Lightweight, but may have lower breaking strength compared to steel. Ideal for activities where weight is crucial.
    • Steel: Heavier, but more durable and has higher strength. Suitable for demanding activities.
  • Type of closure:
    • Screw closure: Safe and reliable, manual screwing is required to open and close.
    • Twistlock: Spring-loaded mechanism for quick and easy one-handed operation, automatically locks when released.
    When choosing carabiners, follow the manufacturer's recommendations and instructions for proper use and maintenance of carabiners. Look for carabiners that meet relevant safety standards, such as those set by the International Federation of Mountaineering and Tourism (UIAA) or CE (Conformité Européene).
