There are several important factors to consider when choosing cranks and derailleurs for a road bike:

  • Chainring size: The number of teeth of the chainring determines the available gear ratios. Smaller chainrings (e.g. 34 or 32 teeth) provide gears for easier pedalling, while larger chainrings (e.g. 50 or 53 teeth) offer higher speed gears. When choosing a converter, consider your physical fitness, terrain and driving style.
  • Compatibility Make sure the cranks and derailleurs are compatible with the bike's bottom bracket. Different cranksets have different axle lengths and mounting systems, such as square taper, Octalink, and others.
  • Material: Cranks and derailleur bodies are usually made from materials such as aluminium, carbon fibre, or a combination of these. Carbon fibre components are lighter and can offer better stiffness, but tend to be more expensive. When choosing materials, consider your budget and the desired weight savings.
