Bike chains
A chain is an important part of the bicycle drivetrain, it is responsible for transferring energy from pedalling to the rear wheel.
Cycling chains are usually made of durable steel alloys. High-quality chains may have surface treatments such as nickel or chrome plating to increase corrosion resistance and reduce friction. Some modern chains may contain titanium or other lightweight materials to reduce overall weight.
Chains are designed to match the number of gears on the bike's cassette or freewheel. Common types include 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 speed chains, and it is very essential to choose one that is compatible with the drivetrain.
Proper bicycle chain maintenance is very important. Regular cleaning and lubrication helps extend its life and ensure smooth and efficient pedalling. Neglecting maintenance can lead to wear, corrosion and reduced performance.
How to determine the correct chain length?
Picking the right length of bicycle chain is crucial for the proper functioning and smooth shifting of the drive train. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you determine the appropriate length:
- Remove the old chain: If you already have a chain on your bike, remove it for an accurate measurement. If you don't have the old chain, go to the next step.
- Determine desired chain length: The most common method for determining chain length is to use the “large/large plus two” rule. The chain must be long enough to precisely wrap each link of the chain around the largest sprocket of the derailleur and the largest cog of the cassette, so that it does not pass through the derailleur and can be freely connected. Two more links of the chain must be added to this length, thus taking into account the maximum necessary length of the chain.
- Consider suspension compression: It is important to consider rear suspension compression when determining chain length. Fully compress the rear suspension by applying force to the rear of the bike, inducing the maximum compression that can occur while riding. Make sure that the chain does not stretch too much when the suspension is compressed, if necessary add two more links.
- Shorten the chain: If the chain is longer than necessary, use the chain riveting tool to disconnect at the required link. Be careful not to remove too many links, as the result will be too short a chain.
- Installing a new chain: After determining the correct length, install the new chain on the bike. Make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper installation.
How to properly clean and lubricate the chain?
Regular cleaning and lubrication of the bicycle chain is essential to keep it running smoothly and efficiently. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to clean and lubricate your bike chain:
- Remove excess dirt and debris: Using a special brush or toothbrush, remove all loose dirt from the chain. Pay attention to the links of the chain, cassette, and converter.
- Apply a degreaser: Apply a bicycle degreaser to the chain. You can spray it directly on the chain or apply it to a clean cloth and run the chain over it. Make sure you go through the entire chain.
- Clean the chain: Use a chain cleaner or a clean rag to scrub the chain thoroughly. If you use a chain cleaning tool, follow the manufacturer's instructions. If using a rag, hold the rag around the chain and pedal backwards, so the chain passes through the rag. Repeat this process until the chain looks clean.
- Apply lubricant to the chain: Apply bicycle lubricant to each link of the chain. Apply a drop of lubricant to each link to ensure thorough lubrication. Be careful not to apply too much lubricant, as it can attract dirt and create unpleasant deposits.
- Wipe off excess grease: After applying the grease, wipe off the excess grease from the chain with a clean cloth. This will help prevent dirt from sticking and keep the chain cleaner.
How to choose the right bicycle chain?
Choosing the right bike chain is important for optimal performance and compatibility with the bike drivetrain. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a bike chain:
- Drive compatibility: Different drive systems such as single-speed systems, derailleur-based systems (e.g. 8-speed, 10-speed, etc.) and internally geared hubs require specific chains intended for the respective systems.
- Number of speeds: If you have a bike with multiple gears, you must pick a chain that corresponds to the number of speeds on the cassette or freewheel. For example, an 8-speed transmission requires an 8-speed chain.
- Brand and model: Choose brands known for their quality and durability. Popular chain brands include Shimano, SRAM and KMC. There are different models within each brand with different features and performance levels, so consider your specific needs and budget.
- Chain width: Different drive systems have different chain widths. For example, an 11-speed chain is narrower than a 9-speed. Make sure you choose the correct width chain to match your drivetrain specifications.
- Durability: Chains can vary in terms of durability and longevity. Look for chains made from high-quality materials such as stainless steel or nickel-plated steel, as these materials typically have better durability and corrosion resistance.
- Weight: If you care about saving weight, there are lightweight chains available on the market. These chains usually have cutouts or hollow pins to reduce weight. But keep in mind that light chains can be at the expense of durability.
- Maintenance: Consider ease of maintenance and cleaning. Some chains have special coatings or treatments that make them easier to clean and maintain, while others may require more frequent cleaning and lubrication.
- Price: While it is important to stay within your budget, it pays to invest in a quality chain that will provide reliable performance and longevity.
