Oils and lubrication for suspension forks and shocks
Bicycle shocks and suspension forks are technically sophisticated components that work with precise pressure, damping, and piston movement. To operate smoothly, quietly, and reliably, proper maintenance, including oil changes and lubrication, is essential.
What types of oils and lubricants are used for bicycle forks and shocks?
Suspension/damping oil
- Used inside the damping chamber of a fork or shock.
- Their job is to control the speed of compression and rebound.
- They have a precisely defined viscosity (e.g. 2.5 WT, 5 WT, 10 WT) - there may be differences between manufacturers even with the same marking, so it is recommended to use the oil recommended by the manufacturer (e.g. RockShox, FOX, Motorex).
- Viscosity affects the damping behaviour: higher = slower damping, lower = faster.
Lubricating oils (lubricating oil/bath oil)
- These oils are located at the bottom of the fork legs or in the auxiliary chambers.
- They are used to lubricate sliding bushings, seals and friction surfaces, not for damping.
- Some brands use specific types of lubricating oil, some (e.g. FOX) use a combination of oil and lubricating grease.
Lubricants - fats (grease, butter, lube)
- They are used for seals, O-rings, gaskets and contact surfaces.
- For example, Slickoleum, RockShox Butter, or FOX Float Fluid.
- They reduce friction during operation and increase the service life of components.
- Some are also compatible with plastics and rubber, which is important for protecting seals.
How often should you lubricate and change the oil in your bicycle suspension?
The frequency of maintenance depends on the intensity of riding, but general recommendations are:Forks:
- Lubricating the sliding seals (foam rings): every 30–50 hours of driving (so-called lower leg service).
- Change the shock absorber oil and seals: every 100–200 hours, or once a season.
- Regularly clean the dust and apply a small amount of oil to the wiper sleeves (e.g. using a drop of oil and lightly pumping the fork).
Shocks:
- External cleaning and lubrication of seals after every muddy or dusty ride.
- Change the damping oil and seals: every 100–200 hours or once a year.
- Some models also require a complete service with bleeding (e.g. FOX, RockShox).
How do I know what oil and how much to use?
The exact amount and type of oil to use can be found in the service manual from the fork or shock manufacturer. For example, RockShox has detailed tables with type and volume for each model and year. If you are unsure, it is best to consult a service centre or check the online documentation.
Can a quick lubrication be done without disassembly?
Yes. After a muddy or dusty ride, you can wipe down the fork legs and apply a drop of grease to the cuffs. Pump the fork to get the grease in. This will significantly improve sensitivity, although it is not a substitute for a full service.
