Bottle cages

A bottle cage or bottle rack is a bicycle accessory that is used to secure a water bottle or other beverage bottle so that it is easily accessible while riding. It is usually mounted on the bicycle frame (most often on the down tube or seat tube). The cages are designed to hold the bottle securely even during rough terrain, while also allowing it to be quickly removed and reinserted.

What types of bicycle cages are there?

The most popular cages among cyclists include the following types:

Classic cage (side or top)

  • Materials: Aluminium, plastic, carbon fibre, stainless steel.
  • Advantages: Lightweight, simple, versatile.
  • Disadvantages: Less stable when driving aggressively (on cheaper models).
  • Suitable for: Road, city and trekking bikes.

Side-entry cage:

Bottle opening on the side, ideal for smaller frames (e.g. MTB or women's bikes)

  • Materials: Aluminium, plastic, carbon fibre, combined materials.
  • Advantages: Easy access even in the confined space of the frame.
  • Disadvantages: Smaller selection of models.
  • Suitable for: Mountain bikes, e-bikes, small frames.

Adjustable/multipurpose holder:

The holder is adjustable to the diameter of the bottle or other containers (thermal flask, can, baby food bottle).

  • Materials: Aluminium, plastic, carbon fibre, rubber.
  • Advantages: Versatility, suitable for longer hikes.
  • Disadvantages: Often larger and heavier.
  • Suitable for: Touring and expedition bikes.

Baskets with magnetic or mechanical locking:

Brands like Fidlock use a magnetic-mechanical system where the bottle snaps into place.

  • Materials: Metal, plastic.
  • Advantages: Very firm grip, easy handling.
  • Disadvantages: Higher price and this type requires a special bottle.
  • Suitable for: MTB, gravel, enduro.
