Bike bottles

A cycling bottle is a specially designed fluid container intended for use while cycling. Its main function is to allow quick and safe access to hydration without having to stop.

What are the basic features of a bicycle bottle?

A bicycle bottle should have the following features:

  • Usually has a volume of 500 ml - 750 ml, some up to 1000 ml.
  • Is placed in a basket (holder) on the bicycle frame.
  • Made of lightweight, durable plastic (often BPA-free) or other materials (e.g. aluminium, stainless steel, thermal insulation layers).

What types of bottles are used for cycling?

Each type of cycling bottle has certain advantages. Cyclists commonly use the following types of bottles:

Standard plastic bottles

  • Lightweight, flexible, available in various sizes.
  • With a classic "push-pull" drinking valve.
  • Typically made of polypropylene, BPA-free.
  • Suitable for most cyclists - both road and MTB.

Insulated bottles (thermal bottles)

  • Double wall or vacuum insulation keeps liquid cold/hot for longer.
  • Slightly heavier and bulkier.
  • Suitable for longer trips or driving in extreme weather.
  • Ideal for summer (cold drinks) or winter (hot tea).

Soft Flask

  • Made of soft silicone material, squeezable.
  • Suitable for pockets, especially for gravel and bikepacking rides.
  • They are sometimes used with a tube like a camelbak.
  • Popular for bikepacking or ultra-marathons.

Aero bottles

  • Special aerodynamic shape – they blend in with the frame or aero mount.
  • Used in time trials and triathlons.
  • Not always compatible with regular holders.
  • Designed for racers focused on aerodynamics.

Aluminium/stainless steel bottles

  • Durable, resistant, ecological.
  • They do not absorb odours or tastes.
  • Slightly heavier than plastic.
  • Suitable for trips, bikepacking, or non-sports performance.
