MTB fenders
Quick-release fenders are most often used on mountain bikes. Compared to road bikes, they are wider, classic mudguards with weld-on mounting are used only exceptionally and are not always possible. The version with seatpost mounting is most typically used on the rear wheel. Fenders adapted for mounting on the fork are installed on the front wheel. For less pollution, ultra-light fenders designed to protect the rider's back with installation on the saddle are used.
Do fenders fit every mountain bike?
Not all fenders are universal. The choice depends on the frame type, wheel size (26", 27.5", 29") and whether you have a suspension fork or a dropper post. However, many models are designed with an adjustable mount.
How are fenders mounted?
- The front one is most typically mounted to the fork crown, to the bottom of the frame, or using Velcro or rubber bands.
- The rear is usually attached to the seatpost or frame via a simple quick release or screw.
Can fenders affect bike performance?
Most modern fenders are lightweight and aerodynamically designed. When installed correctly, they do not negatively impact the ride quality.
What material is best?
Plastic or composite materials are most commonly used – they are lightweight, durable, and flexible. Metal fenders are not used on mountain bikes because they are heavier and less flexible.
Are the fenders also suitable for racing MTB riding?
Racing often uses short, minimalist fenders that protect only the bare essentials to save weight.
