There are several important factors to consider when choosing cranks and derailleurs for a road bike:

  • Gear size: The number of gear teeth, determines the available gear ratios. Smaller chainrings (e.g. 34 or 32 teeth) provide gears for easier pedalling, while larger chainrings (e.g. 50 or 53 teeth) offer higher speed gears. When choosing a converter, consider your physical fitness, terrain and riding style.
  • Compatibility Make sure the cranks and derailleurs are compatible with the bike's centre stack. Different cranksets have different centreline lengths and mounting systems, such as square taper, Octalink, and others.
  • Material: Cranks and derailleur bodies are usually made from materials such as aluminium, carbon fibre, or a combination of these. Carbon fibre components are lighter and can offer better stiffness, but tend to be more expensive. Consider your budget and desired weight savings when choosing materials.
