Tire levers (also called mounting levers) are small tools designed to remove or install bicycle tires from the rim. They are an essential part of every cyclist's equipment - especially when repairing punctures.

What types of levers are there?

There are different types of levers, and each type has its own advantages and disadvantages:

Plastic tire levers

The most common type.
Lightweight, inexpensive and strong enough for most tires.
They do not degrade the rim or the tube.

Metal tire levers (steel or aluminium)

Very durable, suitable for rigid or MTB tires.
Higher risk of rim damage, so it is recommended to use them with caution.
Sometimes with a rubberized surface.

Combined tire levers (plastic + metal core)

Combining the strength of metal and the gentleness of plastic.
Suitable for more frequent use and stiffer tires.

Tire levers with hook or clip

They allow attachment to the wheel spoke - making handling easier.
They help hold the levered part of the casing while working.

How to use tire levers (step by step)

Release pressure: Completely deflate the tube (even if it is empty, so that it does not get compressed between the rim and the tire lever).
Insert the lever under the bead of the tire: Starting on the opposite side from the valve. Insert the lever between the rim and the bead of the tire.
Levering: Carefully pry the bead of the tire out of the rim. Hold the lever by the spoke (if it has a hook). Use the other lever to slide along the rim and release the rest of the tire.
Remove the tire: Once you have one side of the tire out, you can pull out the inner tube. If you need to completely remove the tire, repeat the process on the other side.
Reassembly: First insert the tube (slightly inflated) into the tire. Push the bead of the tire back into the rim with your hands. For a rigid tire, use a tire lever, but be careful not to damage the tube.
