Inner tubes for road and trekking bicycles Inner tubes for road and trekking bicycles (Schwalbe)The cycling tube is made mostly of butyl rubber. Butyl is a very elastic and airtight type of synthetic rubber. As with tires, additional additives are needed to form a rubber compound. The quality of the tube can vary greatly depending on the composition of the rubber. Schwalbe tubes, for example, have extremely high air stability and flexibility. This high elasticity allows you to cover a wide range of different tire sizes.
There is a difference between hot-rolled souls and autoclave souls. Vulcanization in the mold improves the uniformity of the wall thickness, thereby reducing weight and improving air stability. For this reason, autoclave tubes, which can be manufactured more easily, have become less common in recent years. Schwalbe tubes have always been produced by a thermoforming process.
Each soul also needs a valve that is connected to the soul during the vulcanization process.
In addition to the quality of the ingredients, the purity of the rubber compound is decisive for the quality of the core. Prior to pressing, the base material is forced through seven high pressure filters. All tubes are inserted and inflated into a vulcanization mold. Only this guarantees an even wall thickness and high air stability.
All tubes are inflated and tested for air stability for 24 hours. Then each soul is carefully inspected and visually. Schwalbe tubes have been praised by German bicycle dealers for their high reliability for many years.
The core suits a large number of tires thanks to its high elasticity and quality. Tube No. 17 works with tires with a width of 28 to 47 mm - which is a great advantage for storage in the store. At the same time, it is proof of the quality of the soul.
All valves are nickel-plated and threaded. The valve core is always replaceable. Schwalbe tubes with a conventional cycle valve can be tested for pressure because they have a high-pressure valve core.
Every Schwalbe soul is 100% recyclable. Without loss of quality, we can use recycled material in the production of new souls. We have developed a special devulcanization process in our factory and it has been proving to be very successful for several years. Currently, every standard Schwalbe tube consists of 20% recycled old tubes.
Taking into account all transport routes, the energy balance is positive. Only a fifth of energy is used compared to the production of new butyl.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LATEX SOULS?
Latex tubes are more flexible than conventional butyl tubes. That makes them a little easier. Their biggest advantage is the high level of puncture protection. The highly elastic latex material is very difficult to pierce.
The disadvantage lies in poorer air stability. The latex tube must be inflated to the correct pressure before each ride. This explains why latex tubes are not suitable for everyday use.
In addition, latex tubes are very soft and sensitive to oil, daylight, heat and uneven expansion. The tube must be replaced each time the tire is changed.
As these properties lead to many problems, latex tubes are not in our offer.
