RET is a method of indicating breathability. It expresses the breathability of the fabric (energy) required to evaporate a certain amount of water at a clearly specified temperature and humidity. The lower the RET value, the more breathable the fabric.
Breathability is the ability of the material to allow water vapor produced by the human body to pass into the surrounding environment. It depends heavily on ambient climatic conditions, exertion, and other factors. It is essential for the human body to get rid of this vapor through clothing, otherwise the body would overheat. Breathability significantly aids ventilation, which is why clothing is made with ventilation openings.
