For information on installation, adjustment, and replacement of products not found in the user's manual, please contact the place of purchase or a distributor. The dealer's manual for professional and experienced bicycle mechanics can be found on our website (https://si.shimano.com).
For safety, thoroughly read this "user's manual" before use, follow it for proper use, and keep it for future reference.
The following instructions must always be followed to prevent personal injury and physical damage to equipment and surroundings. Instructions are classified according to the degree of danger or damage that may occur in case of improper use of the product.
DANGER - Failure to follow instructions will result in death or serious injury.
WARNING - Failure to follow instructions could result in death or serious injury.
CAUTION - Failure to follow instructions could result in personal injury or physical damage to equipment and surroundings.
WARNING
- To ensure the safety of children using this product, children should be instructed on proper use after both guardians and children fully understand the following information. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury.
- Do not disassemble or modify the product. This may cause the product to malfunction, you may fall unexpectedly and be seriously injured.
- Before attempting to ride with these pedals and cleats (shoes), make sure you understand the operation of the engagement/release mechanism of the pedals and cleats (shoes). SPD pedals are designed to release only when needed. They are not designed to release automatically if you fall off the bike.
- Use only SPD-compatible shoes with this product. Other types of shoes may not release from the pedals or may release unexpectedly.
- Use only SHIMANO cleats (SM-SH51 / SM-SH56) and securely tighten the mounting screws to the shoes. If the screws are not securely tightened, a fall may occur where the cleats do not release.
- Before attempting to ride with these pedals and cleats, brake, then place one foot on the ground and practice engaging and releasing each cleat from the pedal until you can do it automatically and with minimal effort.
- First, ride on a flat surface until you learn to engage and release the cleats from the pedals.
- Before riding, adjust the cleat retention force on the pedals to your needs. If the cleat retention force on the pedals is low, the cleats may accidentally release, you may lose balance and fall off the bike. If the cleat retention force on the pedals is high, the cleats may not be easy to release.
- When riding at low speed or when there is a possibility that you may need to stop (e.g., at a full turn, at an intersection, when riding uphill or turning a sharp corner), release the cleats from the pedals beforehand so that you can quickly put your feet on the ground if necessary.
- When riding in adverse conditions, use a lower cleat retention force to attach the pedal cleats.
- To ensure proper engagement and release, keep the cleats and binding free of dirt and debris.
- Remember to regularly check the cleats for wear. When the cleats are worn, replace them and adjust the cleat retention force before riding and after replacing the pedal cleats.
- If you do not heed the above warnings, the shoes may not come out of the pedals when you want them to, or they may come out unexpectedly or accidentally, and serious injury may result.
- If you ride on roads, be sure to install reflectors on the bicycle. Reflectors are sold separately for models that do not come standard with reflectors. For information regarding compatible reflectors, contact the place of purchase or a distributor.
- If the reflectors are dirty or damaged, do not continue to ride the bicycle. Otherwise, it will be difficult for oncoming vehicles to spot you.
Models with grip force adjustment pins:
- If you are unsure how to adjust the pins on the pedals, contact the place of purchase or a distributor.
- Lift your feet off the pedals and move them to the side, releasing them from the pedals. Place one foot firmly on the ground and practice putting on and taking off the other foot from the pedal until you get used to the entire operation. Otherwise, you may fall and be seriously injured. If you cannot get used to this operation, use the product with spacers installed.
- Wear clothing and protective equipment that are suitable for the way the bicycle is used. Because the spikes are very long, if they come into contact with the skin, they can cause serious injury.
