Brake pads for bicycles

Brake pads are the basic components of a bicycle's braking system and are designed to create friction against the brake discs and develop the necessary braking force. Different brake pads have different levels of braking performance and different lifetimes.

Organic brake pads: made of natural fibres, resins, and fillers. They are known for their modulation and quiet operation, but they can wear out faster and do not achieve optimal braking performance when heated and “wither” quickly.

Semi-metallic brake pads: consist of a mixture of metal particles and organic compounds. They offer better resistance and heat dissipation, which makes them suitable for more aggressive riding, where it is necessary to maintain braking performance even during a longer descent.

Metallic brake pads: contain metal particles and are popular for powerful disc brakes, they work reliably especially in demanding conditions. They offer excellent durability and heat resistance, but can be noisier than pads made of softer compounds.

Brake pads come in different shapes and sizes to suit specific brake types. It is very important to ensure that the brake pads you choose are compatible with your bike's braking system.

When do you need to replace brake pads?

There are several signs that indicate that it is time to replace your brake pads. These include reduced braking performance, squealing or noise when braking, visible wear on the brake pads, or a significant reduction in overall braking performance.

What is the care and maintenance of brake pads?

Regular maintenance of brake pads can extend their life. Here is a short guide to brake pad maintenance:

Regular check: Regularly check the brake pads for wear. If they are significantly worn or have reached the wear indicator line (if present), it is time to replace them.
Cleaning: Keep the brake pads clean by removing any dirt, grime, or particles that may accumulate on the surface. Use a soft brush or cloth to gently clean the brake pads, taking care not to use any abrasive materials that could damage them.
Correct adjustment: Make sure the brake pads are properly aligned with the disc. Incorrectly aligned brake pads can cause uneven wear and reduced braking performance. If necessary, adjust them in such a way as to ensure even contact with the braking surface of the disc.
Break-in period: When installing new brake pads, they may need time to break in to achieve optimal performance. Follow all the manufacturer's special instructions for correct brake pad run-in.
