Hardtail mountain bikes

Hardtail mountain bikes from the second-hand market are synonymous with low weight, direct power transfer, and carefree maintenance. In the second-hand market, you'll find top-notch carbon racing rockets and versatile aluminum trail hardtails from leading brands like Trek, Specialized, Ghost, Scott, Kellys, Cube, and Orbea at a fraction of their retail price.
When choosing a hardtail bike from the second-hand market, we recommend focusing on:

  • Frame material and stiffness: Carbon frames excel in low weight and excellent absorption of micro-vibrations from the rear triangle, while hydroformed duralumin provides high mechanical resistance and long lifespan.
  • Frame geometry – race vs. trail: Race XC hardtails have steeper angles and a longer riding position optimized for uphill speed, while trail hardtails have a slacker head angle and a fork with more travel (120 – 140 mm) for playful downhill riding.
  • Wheel diameter and axles: The modern standard of 29" wheels with Boost thru-axles (15x110 mm front and 12x148 mm rear) provides maximum torsional stiffness and smooth passage over uneven terrain.
  • Drivetrain and shifting level: Focus on single-chainring setups (1x12 Shimano Deore/SLX/XT or SRAM Eagle) which provide a huge gear range with simple shifting without a front derailleur.
