Mountain e-bikes
Even mountain electric bikes, however, must be divided into two separate categories: full-suspension and fixed or hardtail (bicycles with only front fork suspension).
The main difference is the behaviour and driving characteristics in difficult terrain. The full-suspension e-bikes are intended for more demanding terrains, but the difference is not only in the terrain they can handle. The suspension of the rear structure will also bring a proper portion of convenience and comfort. It is thanks to the comfort that the electric bicycle becomes a handy helper, and cyclists suffering from back pain will also appreciate this comfort.
How to choose an electric mountain bike?
When picking an electric mountain bike (e-MTB), there are several key factors to consider that are necessary for off-road riding. Here are the key points to focus on when choosing an electric mountain bike:- Engine performance: Look for an e-MTB with a powerful and reliable engine designed specifically for off-road riding. Focus on mid-drive motors, as they provide better weight distribution and a more natural driving experience, especially on rough terrain. Pick an engine with a higher torque, which will help you climb steep hills and overcome technical routes. In general, e-MTBs have torque ratings from 50 Nm (Newton meters) to 100+ Nm.
- Battery capacity and range: Make sure the e-bike has a battery with enough capacity to cover the required distance. Estimate the range based on the terrain you plan to ride, your weight, and the level of pedalling assistance you expect to use. If you plan to complete longer or more demanding routes, choose a battery with a higher capacity. Electric mountain bike batteries typically range in capacity from around 250 Wh to over 1,000 Wh. However, it is important to note that higher capacity batteries generally provide longer range and more power, but can also be larger and heavier.
- Levels of assistance: Consider the number and variety of levels of pedalling assistance that the e-MTB offers. Different levels of assistance allow you to adapt the amount of power provided by the engine to track conditions and your personal preferences. Look for e-MTBs that offer customizable settings that allow you to fine-tune assistance levels to suit your riding style.
- Suspension system: Off-road driving requires a powerful suspension system that absorbs shocks and maintains traction on rough terrain. Consider whether you prefer a hardtail (front suspension only) or a full-suspension e-MTB (front and rear suspension) according to the type of trails you will be riding. Look for quality suspension components from renowned brands such as RockShox or FOX, which offer adjustable parameters to match track conditions.
- Frame construction and geometry: The frame of a mountain e-bike should be strong, durable and designed specifically for off-road riding. Look for frames made from lightweight and strong materials such as aluminium or carbon fibre. Consider frame geometry, including head tube angle, wheelbase, and chain stay length, as these factors can affect the bike's stability, handling, and climbing ability.
- Brakes and tires: Off-road driving requires reliable braking performance and powerful tires. Look for e-bikes equipped with high-quality hydraulic disc brakes that provide excellent braking performance and modulation. Consider the type of tires supplied with the bike - choose tires with an aggressive pattern and a suitable width for optimal traction and control on different track surfaces.
- Weight: Consider the weight of the e-bike itself. Lighter bikes are generally easier to control and manoeuvre, especially on technical trails. However, it is important to find a balance between weight and durability. Lighter materials such as carbon fibre frames can reduce weight, but may come with higher costs.
- Comfort and seating: Make sure the e-bike fits you properly and provides a comfortable seating position. Consider factors such as frame size, reach, handlebar width. The right fit will improve your handling, manoeuvrability and overall driving experience, especially on technical tracks.
- Brand reputation: Look for brands known for their durability, reliability, and customer support. Read biker reviews and professional tests.
- Budget: Set a budget for your e-bike purchase and prioritize the features that are critical to off-road performance. Determine the best value for your investment by considering factors such as engine power, battery capacity, suspension quality and component life.
Are there differences between women's and men's electric mountain bikes?
In general, there may be some differences between electric mountain bikes marketed for men and women. However, it's important to note that these differences are often related to frame construction and geometry rather than electrical components or performance. Some electric mountain bikes designed for women may have frames with a lower top tube or a sloping top tube, which makes it easier to get on and off when wearing skirts or dresses. In addition, e-MTBs designed for women may have narrower handlebars, shorter cranks, and saddles tailored for women to make them more comfortable to ride. However, it is important to remember that these gender-specific designs are not necessarily a requirement, and many women may find that they are perfectly fine with a unisex or men's electric mountain bike. The most essential factor in choosing an electric mountain bike is to find a model that suits your body size, riding style and preferences, regardless of gender marketing.Answer a few questions and we'll pick the most suitable bike for you
