Stems

Choosing the right bike stem is crucial for optimizing riding comfort and performance. Most modern bikes use threadless stems, where the stem clamps onto the fork neck. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a stem:

  • Stem length: Longer stems provide a more stretched and aerodynamic riding position. Shorter stems can offer better control and a more upright position. Pick the length according to your riding style, body proportions and comfort preferences.
  • Stem angle: The stem angle affects the height of the handlebars. Positive angles (rise) raise the handlebars higher, which is suitable for a more upright riding position, for example for enduro, DH, or trail bikes. Negative angles (decline) lower the handlebars and support a more aggressive, aerodynamic position, they are mainly used in road cycling.
  • Clamp diameter: Make sure the diameter of the stem clamp matches the diameter of the handlebars. Common sizes are 31.8 mm and 35 mm. Older bikes or specific disciplines may use smaller dimensions, such as 25.4 mm or 26 mm.
  • Stem height: Stem height is the vertical distance from the bottom of the stem to its top. Make sure there is enough fork neck for height adjustment and any spacers.
  • Material: Common materials include aluminium and carbon fibre. Aluminium is durable, affordable, and suitable for most riders. Carbon fibre is lighter and can absorb more vibrations from the road, but tends to be more expensive.

Is it possible to change the stem angle?

The angle of the stem can affect the position of the rider on the bike. Some stems have a fixed angle, others are adjustable and allow fine-tuning of the handlebar position. Adjustable stems usually have multiple angles to choose from, allowing you to adjust your position on the handlebars. However, it is important to remember that changing the angle of the stem can also affect the driving characteristics of the bicycle.

How to change the stem on a bicycle?

Changing the bicycle stem consists of several steps. The replacement is typically simple and can be done at home with the right tools.

How to correctly measure the length of the stem?

If you want to measure the length of the bicycle stem, proceed according to the following steps:

  • Remove the handlebars: Loosen the screws on the handlebar clamp plate on the stem. Carefully slide the handlebars out of the stem and set them aside.
  • Measure the length of the exposed stem: After removing the handlebars, you will see the length of the stem that extends beyond the headset. Using a tape measure or ruler, measure this exposed length from the centre of the steerer tube to the beginning of the exposed handlebar socket on the stem.
Don't forget that your comfort is the key to success, so experimenting with different stems and seeking professional advice will help you find the best fit for your cycling needs. You can also use our Bikefitting service to set the seat correctly.
