Shimano PD-M9220 clipless pedals with cage
The XTR PD-M9220 SPD pedals provide reliable grip and stability for demanding enduro, all-mountain and trail riding. Wider contact area for better control over the bike (compared to the M9120 model). The raised platform improves contact between the pedal and the shoe. Four traction pins on each side improve grip when you're not strapped in. Can be combined with CL-MT001 panniers, optimized for trail/enduro riding, for even easier snap-on. Pedals are compatible with existing SPD panniers. Shoe pads may be necessary depending on the shoe model.

For assistance with installation, adjustment and replacement of the products which are not found in the user’s manual, please contact the place of purchase or a distributor. A dealer's manual for professional and experienced bicycle mechanics is available on our website (https://si.shimano.com).
For safety, be sure to read this "user's manual" thoroughly before use, follow it for correct use, and save it so that you can refer back to it at any time.
The following instructions should always be followed in order to prevent personal injury, damage to equipment or damage to the surrounding area. The instructions are classified according to the degree of danger or damage which may occur if the product is used incorrectly.
DANGER – Failure to follow the instructions will result in death or serious injury.
WARNING – Failure to follow the instructions could result in death or serious injury.
CAUTION – Failure to follow the instructions could result in personal injury, or physical damage to equipment or surroundings.
WARNING
- In order to ensure the safety of children using this product, instructions on proper usage should be given to the children by their guardians after the guardians and children have fully understood the information provided. Failure to do so may result in serious injury.
- Do not disassemble or modify the product. It may cause the product to not operate correctly, and you may fall unexpectedly and be seriously injured.
- Before attempting to ride with these pedals and cleats (shoes), be sure you understand the operation of the engagement/release mechanism for the pedals and cleats (shoes). SPD pedals are designed to release only when needed. They are not designed to release automatically in a crash.
- Only use SPD-compatible shoes with this product. Other types of shoes may not release from the pedals, or may release unexpectedly.
- Use only SHIMANO cleats (SM-SH51 / SM-SH56) and securely tighten the mounting bolts to the shoes. If the bolts are not securely tightened, the feet may not be able to release from the pedals, causing a fall.
- Before you attempt to ride with these pedals and cleats, apply the brakes, then place one foot on the ground and practice engaging and releasing each cleat from the pedal until you can do so instinctively and with minimal effort.
- Practice riding on a level surface first until you become adept at engaging and releasing your cleats from the pedals.
- Before riding, adjust the cleat retention force on the pedals to your preference. If the cleat retention force on the pedals is weak, the cleats may disengage accidentally, and you may lose your balance and fall off the bicycle. If the cleat retention force on the pedals is strong, the cleats may not be easy to disengage.
- At low speeds or in situations where there is a possibility that you may need to stop (such as when making a U-turn, at an intersection, when riding uphill or when cornering sharply), release the cleats from the pedals beforehand so that you can quickly put your feet onto the ground at any time.
- When riding in adverse conditions, use a lighter cleat retention force to secure the pedal cleats.
- Keep cleats and binding clean of dirt and debris to ensure proper engagement and release.
- Be sure to periodically inspect the cleats for wear. When the cleats are worn, replace them and adjust the cleat retention force of the pedals before riding and after replacing the pedal cleats.
- Failure to heed the above warnings may result in the shoes not being able to disengage from the pedals when you intend, or the shoes disengaging unexpectedly or accidentally, which may result in serious injury.
- When riding on roadways, be sure to install reflectors on the bicycle. Reflectors are sold separately for models that are not equipped with reflectors as standard equipment. Consult the place of purchase or a distributor for information on compatible reflectors.
- Do not continue riding the bicycle if the reflectors are dirty or damaged. If this is the case, it may be difficult for oncoming vehicles to notice you.
Models with pins for adjusting the gripping force:
- If you are not sure how to adjust the pins on the pedals, consult with the place of purchase or a distributor.
- Lift your feet off the pedals and move them to the side to release them from the pedals. Place one foot firmly on the ground and practice putting on and taking off the other foot from the pedal until you get used to the whole action. Otherwise, you may fall and be seriously injured. If you cannot get used to this action, use the product with the spacers installed.
- Wear clothing and protective gear that are appropriate for the way you use your bicycle. Because the spikes are very long, they may cause serious injury if they come into contact with the skin.
