WARNING
For assistance with installation, adjustment and replacement of the products which are not found in the user's manual, please contact the place of purchase or a distributor. A dealer's manual for professional and experienced bicycle mechanics is available on our website (https://si.shimano.com).
For safety, be sure to read this "user's manual" thoroughly before use, follow it for correct use, and save it so that you can refer back to it at any time.
The following instructions should always be followed in order to prevent personal injury, damage to equipment or damage to the surrounding area. The instructions are classified according to the degree of danger or damage which may occur if the product is used incorrectly.
DANGER - Failure to follow the instructions will result in death or serious injury.
WARNING - Failure to follow the instructions could result in death or serious injury.
CAUTION - Failure to follow the instructions could result in personal injury, or physical damage to equipment and the surrounding area.
WARNING
- In order to ensure the safety of children using this product, instructions on proper usage should be given to children after guardians and children fully understand the information below. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury.
- Do not disassemble or modify the product. It may cause the product to not operate correctly, and you may unexpectedly fall and be seriously injured.
- Before attempting to ride with these pedals and shoes (cleats), make sure you understand the operation of the engagement/release mechanism for the pedals and shoes (cleats). SPD pedals are designed to release only when needed. They are not designed to automatically release in the event of a fall from your bicycle.
- Use only SPD shoes with this product. Other types of shoes may not release from the pedals, or may release unexpectedly.
- Use only SHIMANO cleats (SM-SH51/SM-SH56) and securely tighten the mounting bolts to the shoes. If the bolts are not securely tightened, your foot may not release from the pedals, causing you to fall.
- Before you attempt to ride with these pedals and cleats, apply the brakes, then place one foot on the ground and practice engaging and releasing each cleat from the pedal until you can do so instinctively and with minimal effort.
- Practice riding on a level surface first until you become adept at engaging and releasing the cleats from the pedals.
- Before riding, adjust the cleat retention force on the pedals to your preference. If the cleat retention force on the pedals is weak, the cleats may release accidentally, you may lose your balance, and you may fall from the bicycle. If the cleat retention force on the pedals is strong, the cleats may not release easily.
- When riding at low speed or when there is a possibility that you may need to stop (for example, when making a U-turn, at an intersection, when riding uphill, or when cornering sharply), release the cleats from the pedals beforehand so that you can quickly put your feet on the ground if necessary.
- When riding in adverse conditions, use a weaker cleat retention force to attach the pedal cleats.
- To ensure proper engagement and release, keep cleats and bindings free of dirt and debris.
- Be sure to periodically inspect the cleats for wear. When the cleats are worn, replace them, and adjust the cleat retention force on the pedals before riding and after replacing the pedal cleats.
- Failure to heed the above warnings may result in your shoes not coming out of the pedals when you want them to, or they may come out unexpectedly or accidentally, which could result in serious injury.
- Lift your feet off the pedals and move them sideways to release them from the pedals. Place one foot firmly on the ground and practice putting on and taking off the other foot from the pedal until you get used to the whole action. Otherwise, you may fall and be seriously injured. If you cannot perform this action, use the product with spacers installed or short pins replaced.
- Wear clothing and protective gear that are appropriate for the way you use your bicycle. Because the cleats are very long, if they come into contact with the skin, they may cause serious injury.
- If the reflectors are dirty or damaged, do not continue riding the bicycle. Otherwise, it will be difficult for oncoming vehicles to spot you.
- Do not use the pedals or cleats in any way other than the way described in the user's manual. When the cleat and pedal are facing forward, the cleat can be released and engaged with the pedal. Be sure to read the user's manual for instructions on how to use the cleats. Failure to follow the instructions may result in serious injury.
- Read the manual and choose the right product for your needs. Consider the type of bicycle, the terrain you will be riding on, and the conditions. Cleats with a single release mode (SM-SH51) and cleats with multiple release modes (SM-SH56) are available for use with these pedals. Cleats such as single release mode cleats (SM-SH52) and multi-directional release mode cleats (SM-SH55) cannot be used because they do not have certain functions, such as not providing stable foot release performance from the pedal and sufficient retention force. If you continue to use such cleats, your shoes may not come out of the pedals when you want them to, or they may come out unexpectedly or accidentally, resulting in a bicycle fall and serious injury. Failure to follow the instructions may result in serious injury.
