Gauges and meters
In the category of bicycle gauges and meters, you will find professional measuring tools from renowned manufacturers such as Park Tool, SRAM, Force, BBB, Weldtite, Lezyne, Cyclo tools or Unior. These precise tools are indispensable for chain maintenance, disc inspection, derailleur adjustment and other bicycle components. These are the most common bicycle measuring tools:
Chain wear gauges
Chain gauges are used to measure chain elongation. Such preventive measurement extends the life of the entire drivetrain, as a worn chain can increase wear on the cassette, chainring and derailleur. There are two types of chain gauges:
Simple hook scale (so-called "drop-in")
- The most common type of scale.
- Fast and intuitive to use.
- Cheap and reliable.
- It has two measuring sides (e.g. 0.5% and 0.75% or 0.75% and 1.0%).
- It works by inserting one hook between the links of the chain, and if the other end engages, it indicates a specific level of wear.
Scale with movable arm or tongue
- Slightly more expensive.
- A more accurate mechanical tool that measures exclusively the pitch between the pins (i.e. the actual chain elongation).
- It has a moving part that you press against the chain - an indicator or mark will then show you the exact wear.
Digital callipers and tape measures
- Digital caliper: A digital caliper provides precise measurement of component compatibility.
- Tape measure: These are ideal for measuring the length of frames or cable guides.
Special tools and gauges for components
- SRAM Chain Gap Tool v2: used to precisely adjust the gap between the chain and the frame in Eagle technology, reducing the risk of chain skipping.
- XLC TO‑S68 and Cyclo tools Spoke Ruler: allow you to accurately measure the length of spokes and check the centreing of wheels.
